Photo by @FransLanting A newborn elephant calf will stay with its mother for three years or more before it is weaned, but the widespread killing of elephants for their ivory has left many young elephants without a mother. Aunts from within a herd will often rise to the challenge and take over maternal duties. But in one extreme example of elephant altruism, one adult female in Northern Kenya was seen with thirteen adopted orphaned calves!
