Red fox cubs in evening light – There are few species that are as misunderstood or as unfairly maligned as the red fox. For me personally I have always adored working with them, watching the cubs grow and delighting in seeing them interact, play and chase and use their youthful curiosity to constantly get themselves into mischief. Of course the wary nature of the adults combined with their supreme intelligence and sensory awareness makes them an extremely challenging subject with which to work but this of course has its benefits too. The indulgent way with which I’ve been able to work for the last 15 years makes things a lot easier for me, dedicating huge amounts of time to simply sitting and watching, learning about their movements, their likely habits and how the rise and fall of the sun changes the light in any given location. That being said I am like all photographers entirely beholden to the whims of serendipity and without moments of extreme good fortune, such as this moment here, my image catalogue would indeed be bare. I say often that in every single image that I have ever captured there is always an element of luck for we can have all of the technical know-how, the very best equipment and a decent working knowledge of its mechanics, we might even know a thing or two about field-craft but without the co-operation of the natural world, without its generosity and its beauty then we’d never be able to bring you a moment of tenderness such as this. Going forward the lives of the youngsters will be filled with peril but for this moment at least they were able to simply delight in this moment of innocence.
