Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Puffin in thrift – Having now officially lost one of my favourite locations for photography due to an access issue my excuses for spending yet another summer indulging my passion for badgers are running out. That of course and the fact that our incomprehensibly disgusting and cowardly government has now placed a £50 bounty on the head of every badger means that the local population of these incredible creatures will soon be absolutely decimated. As is always the case with the Tories this issue has zero to do with sound science and everything to do with sycophantically trying to appease the powerful farming lobby, itself desperate to deflect the real reasons why there was a massive resurgence of the previously contained bovine tuberculosis. This resurgence happened just after the foot and mouth crisis when large swathes of the UK were restocked with animals from the south west, the last remaining stronghold for this destructive disease. No matter that btb occurs in rats, deer, sheep and other mammals, it is the badgers that must die even though the cull zones already targeted have seen the scientifically expected rise in incidences. As well as this being yet another reason why I find it impossible to be positive about the future of ours and other species I will continue to fight until my last breath to reveal the beauty, value and the right to life of every single living creature, farmed or wild. With no badgers left to photograph next summer I shall instead turn my attentions to the precipitously declining puffins but to all of you that follow my page, if you do have some wildlife on your doorstep then please do cherish it now, it probably won’t be there for very long.
