With its tight spaces and fluctuating crowds and unpredictable delays, the New York City subway is a perfect venue for observers of both the social compact and the choreography of bodies in close proximity. You can see it all in the hands. 3 years ago, Hannah La Follette Ryan, a 27-year-old nanny who moonlights as a photographer, started @subwayhands. She has since captured hundreds of riders on her commute between Brooklyn and Manhattan. Her followers have no doubt noticed, as she puts it, “how honest, bizarre and beautiful” hands can be. But over 24 hours on the A/C/E, L, 4/5/6, 1/2/3, N/R/Q/W, B/D/F/M and 7 lines on May 19, she found herself moved by all sorts of body language. “I was amazed by all the tenderness I witnessed,” she says. “Arms draped over shoulders, legs across laps, fingers interlaced.” One such couple was heading into Bushwick on Saturday morning. “They were so affectionate and tender with each other, I assumed they’d been together for months,” she says. When the woman got off at a stop moments later, Ryan asked the man how long they had been dating. His answer? “2 days.” Visit the link in our profile to see this and other stories in @nytmag’s annual New York issue, #NYTLoveCity. All about #love, the issue was produced over the course of a single day.
