Forced to evacuate from Hawaii last weekend, photographer @donalboyd captured several aerial photos from a helicopter as him and his friends watched the neighborhood of Kapoho become consumed by lava.

“The day prior to getting into the helicopter, I stood in a circle on the lawn of my friend Jordan’s home and we passed around Ti leaves in silence. The neighborhood was quiet and most people had been evacuated by that time. In the distance, we could see looming clouds signaling the approach of a lava flow advancing towards the ocean and in the direction of the house.
