“After passing a military checkpoint, we met up with neighbors who had stopped on the roadside to survey the plume of white smoke and ominous sky. A couple holding hands grabbed our attention. They had accepted the fate of their Hawaiian home, soon to be covered in lava, and stood strong abound with so much courage amidst the certainty of loss. They told me that they were thankful that they were able to enjoy the house for 20 years and had come to terms with the fact that really nothing can be permanent.
