“We all want the same thing. To be heard. To tell our truth. To make a difference. And to be respected. We teach this every day in every arts class,” Melody Herzfeld, a drama teacher, said last night at the Tony Awards. In February, she hunkered with her students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in #Parkland as a gunman massacred 17 people in its hallways. Last night, she accepted the excellence in theater education prize at the #Tonys, and her students performed “Seasons of Love,” from the musical #Rent. They received a standing ovation, and left some in the crowd in tears. Our staff photographer #SaraKrulwich — who this year became the first journalist recognized with a Tony Honor for Excellence in Theater, for her decades of photographing #Broadway shows — captured this scene. Among the winners: @thebandsvisit, a musical about an Egyptian police orchestra stranded in Israel, won 10 prizes, including best new musical. “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” (@hpplaynyc) won best play. And acting prizes went to Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane for “Angels in America” (@angelsbway) and Glenda Jackson and Laurie Metcalf for @threetallwomenbway.
