Hi, I’m @adrianazehbrauskas, a documentary photographer based in Mexico City. Today I’ll be sharing here photos and stories about what it is to become a father. Earlier this year I traveled to five countries across the world, visiting hospitals in big cities and rural areas, to capture one of the most intimate - and sometimes most painful moments of a person’s life: the birth of their child.
Somsak, 50, bathes his two-day-old son Sailom (which means wind), during a bathing class for parents at a hospital in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Sailom is Somsak’s first child and he couldn’t get enough of holding and caring for him. "I was so happy," he says of his first time holding his child, "the baby looked at me and smiled. It's hard to explain the feeling. I feel love. I feel I love him so much.” Evidence suggests that when fathers bond with their babies from the beginning of life, they are more likely to play a more active role in their child’s development. Research also suggests that when children positively interact with their fathers, they have better psychological health, self-esteem and life-satisfaction in the long-term.
