In celebration of Flag Day on 14 June, our specialist Peter Klarnet tells the story behind ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ – illustrated by the earliest dated printing of the anthem in private hands.⠀

‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ was first published in the Baltimore Patriot on 20 September 1814, just days after Francis Scott Key finished the composition.⠀
.⠀
Less than six copies from that issue are known to exist, and this is the only copy in private hands – two are in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Massachusetts, while another is held by the Wisconsin Historical Society.⠀
