Lake Retba, Senegal, is a shallow lake separated from the sea by a low chain of dunes. In the dry season #saltprecipitates onto the lake bottom, and the locals go wading to collect it in small flat-bottom boats and pile it up along the shore. When I took this photo from a Cessna in 1997 the pilot called it Lac Rose, the pink lake in French, but it was quite brown.
