Photo by: @nickcobbing // The shadow on the face of this arched iceberg is made by the crow’s nest of the ship I’m photographing from. I was using the vantage point, to get some height on this majestic piece of ice off the coast of Arctic Greenland. We didn’t spend too long up close to this giant, because of the risk of ice falling downwards towards our vessel. Also with most of an iceberg being underwater, if a berg were to change buoyancy or even flip, then ice from under the water could damage the ship’s hull. It’s a case of get the picture and then make some headway, to enjoy the sight from a safer distance!

How was this natural ice arch formed? It could have been shaped by the water and wind after the ice had calved from the glacier. A glaciologist travelling with us speculated that the arch had once been part of a channel carrying water through the glacier, before the ice calved into the ocean.
