Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Baboon infant – I captured this image of a rare white baboon infant on my recent trip to Zambia. Though the rest of its troop were traditionally coloured for yellow baboons this rare white variation is most likely caused by a recessive gene, the same sort of recessive gene that causes some black bears to raise white offspring. His differences aside he seemed like he was accepted into the group like any other infant but what his future holds is uncertain. This situation also represented something that I have talked about on my page in recent weeks, that is the importance of making the most of any opportunity, not leaving one on the off chance of finding something better. Unfortunately on this occasion it was my guests who were making the decisions and as the group leader I can only advise. If my group wants to leave a beautiful white infant baboon in dawn light on the off chance of finding a leopard then that is what we will do, even if inside I am struggling to get on board with the idea. That moment however does remind me of a phrase that I use often in my own life, that is ‘listen to the whispers before they turn into shouts’. This is what I should have done in this moment, I should perhaps have fought a little harder, to encourage my guests into the realisation that this was in fact a unique opportunity, one to cherish and preserve, to work for as long as we were gifted but alas I did not. Leaving this youngster behind we never did find a leopard that morning, nor did we ever catch a precious glimpse of this little miracle either. Looking at this image now I am still kicking myself, damn regret sucks! Please do #followme at @andyparkinsonphoto to keep up-to-date with my images @andyparkinsonphoto @natgeo @thephotosociety
