Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Red fox cubs – There are actually three fox cubs in this image but the third one is only just visible below the other two. This was the first night that I actually saw these cubs and I would have loved to have had longer with them but access issues meant that alas, that was not to be. Nevertheless the few days that I was privileged to share with them I will always cherish but next year, though I intend to work with them again I will endeavour to do so on land belonging to people with a brain larger than a peanut! There is still so much ignorance and misinformation peddled about these fantastic creatures and the notion that anyone could ever label these animals with a term as repugnantly dismissive as ‘vermin’ nauseates me. Such a revolting label is intended to diminish, to demonise and to make utterly worthless the life of another living creature so that unspeakable acts of cruelty can be inflicted upon them when, in every single situation a better and more civilised solution always waits to be explored. Though I’d loved to have more time to debunk all of the absurd myths that exist about them I shall with limited time just tackle one or two. ‘They killed my chickens’. There are currently no foxes in my office because it is fox proof. There are currently no foxes in my house as it is fox proof. If you don’t have the intelligence or endeavour to outwit a fox and construct a fox-proof enclosure for your chickens then the blame for their demise belongs in only one place. It is not rocket science, these animals do not possess keys, crowbars or ladders, they are instead a small, but highly intelligent canid that, if an opportunity for a free and easy meal is placed before it, like every other predator on the face of the Earth they will take it. Killing the fox simply creates a territorial void that will be filled within 2-3 days by another fox, and on and on and on!
