In the southwest corner of what is today #Colorado, Ancestral Pueblo peoples lived and flourished for more than 700 years, eventually building elaborate stone communities in the sheltered alcoves of the canyon walls. Then, in the late A.D. 1200s, in the span of a generation or two, they left their homes and moved away. To preserve this area and its stories, President Theodore Roosevelt established #MesaVerde National Park on June 29, 1906, making it the first park to protect the works of man. Today, Mesa Verde preserves nearly 5,000 archeological sites, including Cliff Palace pictured here.
