Kabáh is a Maya archaeological site located in Yucatán state, Mexico. Research has suggested that the area was inhabited from the 3rd century BCE, but most of the architectural remains today were constructed between the 7th and 11th centuries CE. Kabáh was linked to the larger Maya city of Uxmal 11miles (18km) to the north by a 16ft (5m) wide raised causeway, with stone arches at each end.
Here photographed whilst on assignment for National Geographic, the highly textured “Palace of the Masks” which features a stone façade adorned with 260 carvings of the rain god Chaac. Ancient traces of copal (an incense which is still used in ritual offerings by the Maya today), was found in the noses of these stone 'masks.' It is believed that the emphasis here on venerating Chaac as 'protector of the harvest', can be explained by the much drier climate in the northern Yucatán, where rainfall was an imperative, especially in the absence of natural reservoirs (cenotes) to draw upon to help guarantee the crops. The first descriptive account of the Palace of the Masks was published by Stephens and Catherwood in 1843, but the site is still being mapped, explored and released from the jungle.
