Photo by @Tim Laman. Peak Trikora, the third highest summit in Indonesia at 4730 meters (15,580 feet) is hit by the rising sun as I viewed it from Lake Habbema. This is on the huge island of New Guinea (second largest island in the world after Greenland), and this peak is just one of many along the enormous mountain chain that runs across the spine of New Guinea island spanning the Western half (that is Papua, Indonesia) and the Eastern half (which is the independent country of Papua New Guinea). The highest peak is Puncak Jaya aka Carstenz Pyramid at 4884 meters, which is about 200 km west down the spine from here, also in Indonesia. I’m exploring the biodiversity of the alpine environment here in Papua, which is rich in endemic plants, birds, and lots else.
