Photo by @nickcobbing | Most polar bear behaviour is about hunting for their favourite food -seals. They have a highly developed sense of smell and can use their claws to move snow and ice when they catch a scent. With @natgeoexpeditions on Svalbard, we were able to watch this young polar bear safely from the ship’s rail without disturbing it. We looked on while this fine animal displayed various hunting patterns. Swipe across to see the bear putting its head under the water. Our guests asked if polar bears can smell underwater? The answer is no, but polar bears have evolved to see under the ocean surface; they possess a transparent eyelid (called a nictitating membrane) which protects the eye while allowing the animal to see clearly. #polarbear #arctic #nature #seaice #svalbard #ice #arcticocean
