“My life is doomed,” Mariam Khatoon told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. She sat in a plastic chair in a ramshackle house, the concrete foundation cracking beneath her feet. Last year her husband, Alimuddin Ansari, was dragged out of his van by a mob. Police officers pulled him away, but he died a few hours later from internal injuries, officials said. A rumor had spread that Alimuddin, a Muslim trader, was transporting beef. From cellphone footage — the culprits gleefully shot pictures of themselves hitting him — investigators identified 12 culprits and a court sentenced all of them except a juvenile to life in prison. But a higher court recently granted an appeal. And where did 8 of the men go the moment they were granted bail? To the home of Jayant Sinha, a member of Parliament and a minister for civil aviation. Jayant is a Celtics fan. He graduated from @harvard and worked for @mckinseyco. His embrace of the convicted killers has become the political stunt that Indians can’t stop talking about. Saurabh Das photographed Mariam at home in a village near Hazaribagh. Visit the link in our profile to read the full story.
