Photo by @andyparkinsonphoto // Mute swan cygnets sleeping – There is no better feeling in wildlife photography than to know that one’s presence has been completely accepted. The dawning realisation that all of the hundreds of hours of invested time have been recognised and that the animals or birds that I cherish and seek to protect are able to feel so completely at ease with me at close quarters. This as you can see is the case here. As the parents slept peacefully close by I was trusted, by both the cygnets and the adults, to stand close by, shooting vertically downwards onto their bundle of snooze. Though the day was bright and overcast I still ratcheted my ISO up to 6400, thereby allowing me to be able to close my aperture down to F20. This allowed me to bring as many of the cygnets into focus as possible and also gave me some depth of field flexibility, just in case one of them suddenly decided to move. Working at such close quarters on an 80-200mm F2.8 lens the depth of field reduces greatly and even as tall as I am I still had to stand on my tip toes in order to be able to focus at all, so close was I to the minimum focussing distance. What I like about this entire sequence of images is the feeling of calm that the cygnets exude, sleeping peacefully and appearing to seem safe and content. There is also a feeling of satisfaction, of knowing that all the while I had worked respectfully and cautiously, building up the bond of trust over weeks and months and then being privileged to enjoy such an intimate window into their lives.
