#SpeakingInDance | “My idea for this dance was to take a piece of Western European music and all of myself,” said the choreographer @robertgarland. In his ballet “New Bach,” created for @dancetheatreofharlem in 2001, he pays homage to George Balanchine, as well as to African-American vernacular dances, like the Harlem Shake. And, in a long solo originally created for Donald Williams, he set about expanding the ways in which a black male figure could be seen. (Yes, Robert was ahead of his time.) This exceptional ballet — performed at the @lincolncenter Out of Doors festival on August 4 — includes this flowing pas de deux for @cserrano212 and @davonwdoane, which was inspired in part by Arthur Mitchell, the co-founder of the company, now in its 50th year. “Everything I learned from him as a partner is in it,” Robert said. Da’Von described the duet as falling in love with somebody in 3 and a half minutes: “How do you live your life in a matter of moments?” he said. “It’s a total reflection of how delicate life is.” As @cserrano212 told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk, “If I were to describe it in one word, it would be ‘free.’” @mosadek made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance. #DTH50
