We’re wrapping up today’s Instagram field trip with @barnesfoundation. In the 1870s, Paul #Cezanne painted several small works devoted to the subject of bathers—a theme with which he engaged continually over his career, culminating in “The Large Bathers,” a painting that seems to have consumed Cézanne for roughly ten years. The canvas bears the marks of a long, labored working process, with a surface so impossibly thick with paint that it rises up in clumps in some areas and forms sculptural ridges in others.
