‘This exquisitely painted still-life by Lucian Freud, dedicated to his second wife Lady Caroline Blackwood, is a critical rediscovery. Held in the same private collection for almost seven decades, it will be making its debut in our upcoming Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Auction this October. Freud met the beautiful, wild and charismatic Blackwood in 1949 and the couple eloped three years later. After a turbulent five-year marriage, they split in 1958 – but among Freud’s many relationships, his time with Blackwood left perhaps the greatest mark on his life. Inscribed ‘for Caroline with all my love, Lucian’, this never-before-seen in public painting – ‘Still Life with Zimmerlinde’ – will be on view in our London galleries during Frieze Week.
