Photo by @anniegriffithsphotography. Barrier islands are constantly on the move. The naturally growing deep-rooted sea oats are the crucial plants that hold dunes in place on barrier islands. They are essential to dunes weathering bad storms. Development often breaches the dunes and destroys the sea oats, making these islands vulnerable to rapid erosion, especially in the face of massive storm systems and hurricanes.
I photographed these sea oats on one of South Carolina’s barrier islands for a National Geographic (@ナショナルジオグラフィック) book and traveling exhibit called “Last Stand: America’s Virgin Lands,” authored by @barbarakingsolver. Our goal was to celebrate the last 1% of wilderness remaining in the United States, and urge its protection.
It was shot on black and white infrared film and I then hand tinted the resulting prints. My goal was to use this romantic technique to give the images a sense of timelessness. The work raised more than a quarter million dollars for grassroots conservation efforts.
