Photo by @vincentjmusi | Drifter, 2018. He could be The Big Lebowski of dogs, one the seven great wonders of the canine world if such a distinction existed. Drifter is 140 pounds worth of Cane Corso. An Italian Mastiff identifying as Appalachian, his breed is fondly recognized by at least one person in his adopted home state of West Virginia. Almost Heaven. Where country roads take Drifter away from home on the days when he scales the six-foot perimeter fence at his home and determinedly makes his way to one of the local pubs where his owner can find him, when he wants to be found. You see, when using only two of his legs, Drifter stands well over 6 feet tall. He’s easily more than half that height when gravity or circumstances demand the use of all four legs. It should be noted that by choice, he does not walk upright or drive an automobile, which is good for a dog that hangs around that many craft beers and bluegrass groupies. He is a laid-back, easy going four year-old, who likes to sleep in late and is no favorite of a particular mail-carrier who will not approach his house, possibly having seen too many episodes of Game of Thrones for their own good. After our photo shoot, we treated Drifter to a cone of vanilla soft–serve ice cream at a nearby restaurant, which is the kind of thing you can do in the kind of town we live in. The Dude abides. #TheYearOfTheDogs is a personal project of mine, if you like dogs and this sort of thing, I’d invite you to follow @vincentjmusi A note to those curious about the crop of Drifter’s ears should know that he was adopted this way.
