I remember watching the Olympics as a child in awe of gymnasts, dancers and other athletes. I just presumed that I would not be good at anything like that. The story I told myself about my body was based on flawed assumptions that I took on from the world around me. Well-meaning friends and family told me that my best gift was my mind and I should concentrate on doing well in school. So I followed their advice and opted out of even the most basic gym class. In high school I was in a special academic program that allowed me to just basically read more books instead of move my body. People ask me all the time what I was doing before yoga. My answer is nothing physical. I came to this practice with no training of any type. And it’s not like the poses came easily to me. My first attempt at a split landed me with a broken seam in my pants. Luckily that happened before I was sharing my practice on social media. It takes time, or, at least it did for me. Dedication, determination, consistency, lots of hard work. These are the keys to success in any endeavor. Of course grace and natural talent help. But I can’t tell you how many talented individuals I’ve seen drop out of the practice only to be surpassed by slow, steady practitioners who just never give up. _ Something changed for me when I’d been practicing for a little while and some of the asanas finally became accessible. While the purpose of asana isn’t about proving or earning your worth, I couldn’t help but feel a new-found respect for my body when it could actually achieve some semblance of steadiness in the practice. It was like I finally had something to celebrate. I love that the practice is difficult for me because it means that much more when something clicks. One day I looked down and through the lens of asana saw love. It’s not the asana, it’s the love that matters. _ If you feel like you’ll never do the splits join me LIVE from NYC this Friday at 12 PM EST on @omstarsofficial for Beginner Splits. Be sure that tune in. _ New print is my design made by @liquidoactive _ Photo @b.lvvk @freexmoney #practiceyogachangeyourworld #onebreathatatime ?
