While these species have roamed the planet for millions of years, today, due to human greed and shortsightedness, they have become the poster child of impending extinction. But just this May, with
I was able to bear witness to a story of revival and resilience and peer in to a brighter future in seeing the first six black rhinos touch down in @Zakouma_National_Park in Chad, almost 50 years since they were hunted out. @AfricanParksNetwork, a conservation NGO that manages protected areas on behalf of governments in Africa, has managed Zakouma for the past eight years. Together, with the Chadian Government, they have practically stopped poaching in this once war-torn park. Elephants are on the rise for the first time in decades, tourism is flourishing, safety has been restored, and a conservation-led economy is emerging for the surrounding communities. @AfricanParksNetwork has spent eight years getting ready for this moment, to bring the rhinos back to where they used to be. When the plane touched down carrying this special cargo, Zakouma’s Rangers lined the runway and saluted their arrival, and thousands of community members came to pay their respects, and deiver a warm homecoming. Up to 14 more rhinos will be on their way next year, establishing a genetically diverse founder population, so the species can breed, and thrive in their secure but wild home.
