Photo by @mishkusk ( Michaela Skovranova) | Just a few metres underwater at one of the last remaining Australian Sea Lion colonies I got to share a beautiful moment with the local sea lions. I would drop down underwater where they were resting and playing and stayed holding my breath as long as I could. We are both utilizing our mammalian dive reflex - an evolutionary trait we both share. Australian Sea Lions breathe oxygen, just like us. They talk to each other, tease each other and collaborate with each other. Unfortunately, the Australian Sea Lions are one of the rarest in the world suffering from threats such as entanglement, marine debris and habitat destruction. The challenges ocean creatures face are incredibly complex, however, we now more than ever have an opportunity to learn and explore different options. We have access to information and many of us are fortunate enough to be able to make choices which allow us to move through this world in a more conscious way. The ocean is everyone's blue backyard - so where ever we are in the world we are able to contribute to the health of this incredible ecosystem - whether its through waste reduction, conscious food choices or supporting marine parks which are absolutely vital for allowing fish stocks to replenish - main food source for creatures such as the Australian Sea Lion. #ocean #nature #wildlife #marinepark #greataustralianbight #australia #southaustralia #australiansealion #freedive #naturelovestories
