Hi. This pigeon's name is Cher Ami. And Cher Ami is a hero. Under heavy fire, cut off by the enemy, and desperate for rescue, the men of what became known as the Lost Battalion had only two homing pigeons left. On the afternoon of October 4, 1918, American artillery inadvertently began falling on them in the Forest of Argonne in France. They had to get a message out.

In the chaos, one of the two pigeons escaped. The British homing pigeon named Cher Ami (Dear Friend) was the only hope. Here was the bird's message: "We are along the road parallel 276.4. Our own artillery is dropping a barrage directly on us. For heaven's sake stop it." Would Cher Ami get the message through? Yes! An hour later, the pigeon arrived bearing the scars of battle (notice a missing leg) and the last communication from the Lost Battalion. The shelling ceased.
You can visit Cher Ami, World War I hero, in our "Price of Freedom: Americans at War" exhibition and we hope you do.
