A nearly decade-long mission, IceBridge uses a complete suite of instruments that includes a laser altimeter to collect data about changes in Earth’s ice. This is the first year IceBridge will be surveying Antarctica under our recently launched satellite, ICESat-2, which studies ice from space. IceBridge pilots will be aligning the IceBridge DC-8 plane so that its laser altimeter’s swath encompasses the tracks of two of ICESat-2’s laser beams, allowing scientists to compare measurements between the two missions.
