Photo by @jeffmauritzen. Words by Justin Kavanagh. //Newgrange, County Meath, Ireland, at dusk. Peer out the burial chamber under the ancient mound around Dec. 21, & you’ll witness the winter solstice sun crawling through the ingeniously aligned roof box above the tomb’s entrance. Which chieftains were buried here, and what regeneration of life did the architects hope to bring them on the darkest day of the year?
Modern-day Meath men greet each other playfully “Are ye fit?” The men who constructed the three ritual sites known as Brú na Bóinne certainly were. These monuments are astonishing feats of engineering, architecture, artistry, and astronomy, and are now a #UNEDCO World Heritage Site. The complex of sites—#Newgrange, Knowth, & Dowth—offer an unparalleled range of prehistoric art carved into stone. Many experts believe the circular and serpentine patterns are local maps: Perhaps these stones were the precursors of #NatGeo. For more photo adventures from #Ireland and beyond, please follow @jeffmauritzen.
