One of my best friends Orangutan Siswi whom I’ve known since she was born in the wild many years ago. Middle-aged now, she is still the most dominant female in the Camp Leakey area here in Tanjung Puting National Park in the province of Kalimantan Tengah (Central Indonesian Borneo). Siswi’s brothers and son, in the manner of wild orangutan males, have long left the area and don’t come around much any more. Siswi, in the manner of wild females, has stayed in the area where her mother, a wild-born released ex-captive lived and struggled to finally become a free-ranging competent orangutan adapted to life in the wild. Born in the wild, Siswi never had that struggle. Her struggles were to achieve the dominance her late mother held. As she has gotten older, Siswi wields that dominance in an increasingly tolerant manner over her fellow females. Her mother was my best friend. After her mother’s death, Siswi over the years gradually became one of my best friends as well despite the fact that she was often away foraging in the tropical rain forest for the wild fruits that are the orangutan’s mainfood. The amazing thing to me is there are people who dislike the fact that a human being has a free-ranging great ape as a friend and considers a pongid as an equal. Siswi can’t read or write but she draws, taking my pen to do so, and her sensibilities, sensitivities, and even good sense (most of the time)help illuminate the orangutan’s world. She is as luminous as any star on the silver screen.
