Arriving today in #NYC, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s ‘Das Soldatenbad (Artillerymen)’ is one of two masterpieces recently restituted to the heirs of art-world luminary, Alfred Flechtheim. Painted in 1915, immediately after Kirchner was released from military service during the First World War, the monumental work is an arresting representation of the psychological realities of combat. The painting depicts a group of young military recruits herded together in a shower hall, confined in a small space under the oppressive gaze of a uniformed superior. Prior to its restitution earlier this year, ‘Das Soldatenbad’ had resided in the distinguished collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. A highlight of ‘The Beautiful and Damned’, this compelling canvas will be offered in our Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale in #NYC on 12 November. #SothebysImpMod
