A Destitute Man’s Meal

This hand that was held out to me such a long time ago, was that of an Afghani man who had lost everything during the war in which the brutality of the Russian soldiers and their bombardment had almost achieved their goal of bringing a starving Afghan population to its knees. Nevertheless, this man still retained his pride in being human. When he caught sight of me with my cameras as I was covering the conflict, he came up to me. He had just received his ration from the UN and simply said, “Look at what we are given”. His words were as dignified as they were resigned.
