Photo by @max.lowe // This photo is from one of my first trips abroad as a young aspiring photographer, traveling in India for several months with friends. We had booked tickets in the cheapest compartment of a train from Mumbai to Agra as we were traveling on a dime, and the trip took something in the way of 18 hours, most of which we were joined in our compartment by different people partaking in sections of the journey. This Sikh man didn’t speak any English, but as my friends slept we communicated in hand signals, smiles and laughs about our far flung lives. Every time I look at this portrait I’m reminded of the fact that despite borders, cultures and languages that separate us, simple human connection is one of the most beautiful and meaningful things we can find, and in so many ways it redeems us.
