Even if you look attentively at this photo, taken on Sunday, August 13, 1973, you will, without a doubt, never guess what is happening. … . This image was made in Plouescat, Brittany, in the Kernic bay, where horse racing is organized traditionally sometime in August–on a Sunday when the tide is at its peak. This picture became one of the most popular and commented upon from the recent exhibition dedicated to my work at Les Champs Libres, a museum in Rennes, on the theme of Brittany. By chance, I happened to be at the exhibition the day the granddaughter of one of the characters from the photo–the older man at the far right­–passed by. This woman, whom I was meeting for the first time, had just recently discovered this photo. She explained to me that the picture shows a family of racehorse owners, which I did not previously know. . The four men–father, son and employees–were on a hedge that had fallen to the ground. The slight elevation prevented their feet from touching the water. They had moved the hedge to a spot where they could enjoy a view of the entire course and admire the horses as they ran full speed to the finish line.
