Photo by @jimrichardsonng The Callanish Stones have character. Unlike Stonehenge where the stones overpower you with their sheer bulk, these at Callanish beguile you with their stylishness — and history. They were quarried 5,000 years ago from Lewisian Gneiss, some of the oldest rock on our planet, stuff that was formed deep in the bowels of Earth three billion years ago. Neolithic folk continued to “worship” here even after they became Bronze Age folk. Then by about 800BC it was abandoned and peat started to layer up, eventually hiding all but the tall tips. Imagine the local surprise in the nearby village in 1857 when they dug away five feet of peat to reveal their true height!
