It is the oldest public university in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka and was established in 1974 as the sixth campus of the University of Sri Lanka. The island's literacy rate is more than 96 percent, which is above average by world and regional standards.

Sri Lanka is a densely populated, seemingly idyllic island in the Indian Ocean finally emerging from decades of a brutal civil war. Today it is known for its beautiful white beaches, wildlife and culture. The hope is that it can move forward and begin to solve some of the issues of postwar reconciliation, a story I covered for National Geographic (@ナショナルジオグラフィック).
