Our Conservators are getting ready for the Chinese Galleries reopening by working to clean and treat objects. Emily Brown, the Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in Decorative Arts and Sculpture Conservation, has been spending quality time with this earthenware tomb figure from 8th century China. Last repaired in the early 1900s, this is the first time the camel has been treated since its accession into the collection in 1964. Emily began by first cleaning off dirt, grime, and old restoration material (which obscured most of the original surface) to reveal the bright colors of the tri-colored glaze. She then restored and toned areas of loss. Emily also sampled the ceramic for scientific analysis and took x-rays to learn more about the material nature, original construction, and repair history of the object. Treatment is now complete and the Bactrian camel eagerly awaits reinstallation early next year.
