I had the great honor of participating in “American Valor, A Salute to our Heroes “ a few weeks ago. This event, put together by the @americanveteranscenter was deeply moving. I got to chat with incredible veterans, active military service men and women, and military families. I introduced two veterans (Felix Rodriguez and Shiloh Harris) who have served our country with such courage and humility. I was also able to chat a bit with two other honorees who have such incredible stories, Clint Hill and Katie Cook. What struck me the most in that room was the great humility with which every honoree spoke. It’s clear when you are in a room with members of our military, that they are all in it for the greater good… To be a part of something that is so much bigger than themselves. No one enlists to bring themselves glory. No one sets out to win a medal. They enlist to participate in a great act of service, which so often comes at a great cost to themselves and their families. Every person who was honored took their moment on stage to praise their fellow brothers and sisters in arms who also acted with such valor. I was blown away by the honesty with which they spoke. It takes great humility and vulnerability for a soldier to admit their struggle with depression, but that is exactly what both Clint Hill and Shiloh Harris spoke about. These men have used their pain to bring peace to other people struggling with the same things. They have brought their darkness out into the light and that act has made a tremendous impact on the lives of so many. We owe our veterans and our military members and their families a great debt of gratitude. I honor them today. You can watch “American Valor, A Salute to our Heroes” starting Nov 11th. Check your local listings.
