So, I think it is officially the “Holiday Season”. The Holiday movies have started to air. I’m going to the kickoff party for #itsawonderfullifetime tomorrow night to promote my new Christmas Movie #ChristmasPenPals. I went to the store yesterday to grab some supplies for my daughter’s birthday, and Christmas has exploded all over consumer America. I love Christmas.. Christmas music, holiday traditions, when the weather gets colder and we have to crank up our heat. I love family and friend gatherings. From my faith perspective, this season is about the Embodiment of love and acceptance entering into the world to heal our broken hearts and set us on a course toward wholeness. It’s a new beginning. But what is inherent in that belief is that the world and our hearts need fixing. We need healing. We long to be made whole. Last week was a brutal week here in California. The shooting in Thousand Oaks touched me through a few different friends who lost people in another senseless act of violence. A friend of mine lost three people from his community and within 48 hours was packing up his home and family to evacuate due to the fires. Another friend of mine lost a precious member of her family. Thousands of folks are displaced. Families are devastated and grieving the loss of their children, brothers, sisters, parents. People who built their homes, experienced years of holiday seasons in their places of refuge are returning to piles of ash. This holiday season, I want to lean into and be present with the reality of pain, while actively looking for the hope and healing that I think is profoundly present even in the worst of our suffering. So while I sing carols, and decorate cookies, and cook meals, I want to hold pain and hope in my heart, knowing that I do not need to be afraid of the pain because the growth that happens through it can so often lead to an even greater hope. If Christmas is truly about Love entering the world, let me lean into that Love. Let me embrace hope and a new beginning, and let me not give into despair. Where are the places of pain in your life? Where do you need healing? How will you embrace hope and begin again?
