Harlow’s birthday party was on Sunday and I need to give a shout out to the cake, because I decorated it myself and it was one of those extremely rare moments when I felt like Supermom. Harlow has been planning her birthday cake since the summer. She said she wanted a fairy cake, then she switched to a butterfly cake and more recently she switched her party theme to “stars.” She told me she wanted a star shaped cake with butterflies and fairy dust on top. I told her a star shaped cake would mean wasted cake, so she agreed that stars on top of the cake, along with butterflies and fairy dust, would do the job. When I tried to describe all her ideas to the cake place, it sounded over the top and crazy, and I realized it would be way more cost effective to just do it myself. So, I bought a plain vanilla cake and then bought edible star glitter and edible butterflies on Amazon. I had about ten minutes to decorate the cake between when we arrived at the party and when everyone else arrived, and I was a little nervous. On the way there, I told Mike to pick up icing to affix the butterflies and he bought royal blue (surprise!), which I thought was going to ruin everything but turned out great, because the bright blue gave a little extra something to the butterflies when I creased them in the center. (Very hard to do without breaking them in half, FYI!) Anyway, it took eight minutes and voila! Butterfly star fairy dust cake, per Harlow’s request ? You can swipe left to see before and after. I also included a pic my mom took before Harlow blew out her candles, which is the sweetest thing ever. And a video my sister took of all the kids singing happy birthday. They were so loud and Harlow was so happy and it was truly amazing to be a fly on the wall watching my baby soak up all that attention. Then she refused to give up until all those candles were blown out. If you look closely, you can see Mazzy trying to help her out at the end from afar.
