On the sandy beaches of Oman’s Masirah Island male ghost crabs build formidable ‘sandcastles’. These structures are designed to attract passing females and signal the male crab’s strength and vigor. The sand used to construct the pyramids is taken from a burrow excavated right next to them. On some remote beaches (Pic 2) the abundance and density of these structures can become really impressive. To document this behavior I spent day after day lying motionless in the sand waiting for the crabs to begin construction one claw full of sand at a time.
