#10featuredteachers meet Belle, who cut to the front of the line by calling me MR. Bowie. Her link is in my bio./ Hi Mr. Bowie! Thank you so much for recognizing the challenge that teaching truly is. I never knew you were a teacher- I actually retired after one year as well! (Back then, I taught Art.) Unlike you, I returned to education ... after a decade of working in the health and fitness field. I started my teaching come-back as an aide in alternative education, working in a suspension room while I worked on getting teaching credentials again. Last year, I taught high school equivalency and adult basic education while going to grad school full time. My students also included several English Language Learners and students with disabilities. (The photos are from this teaching experience- my stellar students always loved the faces I apparently make while teaching and talking. I have no idea what they’re talking about.) This past summer, I earned my certification to teach students with disabilities, grades 7-12, and this year I teach a 6:1:1 self-contained class of 7th & 8th grade boys classified with Emotional and Behavior Disorders. Some of my students have additional learning needs as well. I teach all four core subjects (ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies) for both grades in my class. Since it’s my first year teaching these grade levels, I don’t have too many materials. There weren’t many school resources when I unpacked, and I haven’t been able to buy too many yet. I was hired very shortly before the start of this school year, so I’m learning what I need as I teach. Several colleagues have offered to share, because they’re wonderful people, and administration has been helpful in assisting us share books for ELA. Most texts I have in my classroom are outdated, so I try to find online resources and videos that are more engaging; I usually create guided notes and graphic organizers for students as well. (Math is especially challenging because the text is confusing- even to me, and I actually like math.) My students prefer hands-on learning and real-life applications, so these are the things I aim to bring in to my classroom as I continue to teach.
