It’s a look, and these Nigerians are pushing up against social conservatism with it. In the ‘80s, #Nigeria was going through a series of military juntas in which cultural and artistic expression were heavily policed. Since then, the government has returned to a democracy, but most of Nigeria remains politically, socially and religiously conservative. Still, some Nigerians continue to style themselves in the name of free expression. “I embrace my masculine and feminine sides,” @denolagrey, an actor and television personality, said of his style. In 2015, after styling himself for a show in which he was a co-host, he tried a new look, belting his suit high up, around his torso. He posted an image to his social media pages, and comments of outrage poured in. A few months later, at @lagosfashionweekofficial, a number of male guests showed up in a similar style. @janhoekjoh and @stephen.tayo shot this photo of Denola.
