Much of what I photograph is heavy. Topics we don’t enjoy considering. I was in northern Uganda working on my first story for @ナショナルジオグラフィック, When The World Forgets. It was my second visit to this beautiful country, each time carrying emotions I had to somehow distill from their complexities into meaning. At this time, just over 14 years ago, the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) was still waging a barbaric war in the north of Uganda and southern Sudan. More than 150,000 women, children and men lived in displacement camps in Gulu. Already refugees for years, at night, more than 10,000 children would walk from their families tents, seeking safety in NGO supported camps, one known as Noah’s Ark. If these children hadn’t sought safety from the night, the LRA would kidnap boys to become child soldiers, girls to be sex slaves. An entire generation grew up without sleeping with their families. This nightly commute signifies hope, through the kindest support of others where even in darkness, there is light.
