I was in Saudi Arabia photographing part II of the @outofedenwalk story for @ナショナルジオグラフィック. Driving hours through deserts, dune after dune, rarely anyone in sight, off to my left appeared a patch of trees. Date palms, bent and curling, serpents swimming against the tide of sand. It was nearing night, and I asked my friend and driver to stop, wondering why these palms were dying. He said the water table had been drained, the scarcity of rain in conflict with overuse of our most precious resource, a mark on our imbalanced ecosystem.

Often I’m asked what is my favorite camera. There is no favorite. None is better than another. While in this wilting field, I saw what felt like the serpent I’d seen in dreams. Reaching into my shirt pocket, I used what is often my favorite camera, a landscape in 6x6 format, feeling how this moment should be seen through memory we think fades, but is always present. This photograph and others were one of the first iPhone photographs ever published in National Geographic magazine for the story, The Wells of Memory.
