It was hot, a long day in a most driest area of Djibouti. On this late afternoon from who knows where en route to Djibouti City, off to the right was a sprinkling of light blues, pinks and yellows. Something so beautiful didn’t seem right, and I asked my friend, Stanislas, to stop the car. To my astonishment, across a vast area were thousands of plastic bags, blown by the wind into the desert, lodged amongst the thorns of acacia trees. Never had I seen such an unpleasant sight, waste that will take centuries to decay. I could have made a book of this landscape, so many acacias, so much plastic. @ナショナルジオグラフィック thankfully published this photograph across two pages, knowing it had to be seen.

There is hope for change…in my gallery in West Stockbridge, MA, @shakerdam, a woman once came. She didn’t want coffee or anything. Only to use the bathroom and have a quick glass of water. When she saw this photograph the woman stopped, put her glass down and stood in silence for about a minute. She then turned to me and said “I would like this print. I want to hang it in my kitchen so each day my children can see what we’re doing to our planet”.
