? Philadelphia MOVE activist Debbie Africa has been granted parole and reunited with her son, Mike, for the first time outside prison walls in their entire lives. Debbie has won release from prison after a nearly-40-year campaign for her freedom. In 1978, hundreds of armed police officers raided the homes of activists with MOVE, the African-American political group in Philadelphia. One police officer was killed and nine activists—including Debbie—were convicted and handed life sentences in a controversial trial. MOVE members have long insisted that the police officer was shot by another officer in a case of friendly fire. When Debbie was arrested, she was 22 years old and eight and a half months pregnant with her son, Mike Jr.
