Did you know the fox species that is most closely related to the red fox lives in the deserts of North Africa? It is called the Ruppell’s Fox and is well adapted to these conditions. While the Red fox is well know for its dense coat that allows them to survive in sub zero conditions, The Ruppell’s fox has adaptations all about staying cool. They have a short light colored coat, very large ears and are less than half the size of a red fox. Their diet consists of a lot of insects with the occasional rodent or snake. It is a prolific digger and will dig deep burrows to help survive the heat. They also hunt mostly at night to escape the daytime heat. Living in these extreme conditions allows this fox species to avoid competition with the red fox to a large degree. Ruppell’s fox has what it takes to beat the heat.
