I’m going (back) to Sundance! ? Soooo excited to be heading off to Park City in a few days as a Juror for the Sundance Film Festival Shorts program! My first short film BUGCRUSH won the Jury prize at Sundance when it premiered there back in 2006 - and it doesn’t seem like that long ago I was roaming around Park City handing out little homemade BUGCRUSH buttons and nervously awaiting our screenings. Trying to figure out what exactly I was supposed to be doing while I was there. It was the first time I’d ever even BEEN to a film festival. ? I thought I’d made a movie that only a few dark and artsy freakish types (like me:) would like.... but after BUGCRUSH played, I would hang around outside the theater - anxious to talk to any and everyone about my film. I was shocked at who approached me to say how much it affected them. Middle aged women. Straight teenagers. Hipsters. The film (based on the brilliant short story by @scotttreleaven) tapped into some pretty universal themes of longing and desire - and got under the skin of a much wider audience than I ever imagined. ? If anything - the gays were the least receptive to the story of a high school crush gone horribly wrong. When the film later played at queer festivals I discovered gay men seemed to like their films with lots of naked boys and happy feel-good endings (which - spoiler alert - BUGCRUSH - most definitely does NOT have.) Horrible generalization - I know - but it was 2006 and thats what it felt like at the time. Gay Horror and Queer Fear were definitely not “a thing”. Now we’ve got podcasts like #HORRORQUEERS by @tracedthurman and @bstolemyremote and @queerwolfpod and HORROR and GAY are no longer mutually exclusive.... ? Who’s going to be at Sundance?
